The true story of Michael Doleman, a troubled teenager who embarks on his first sea journey on the ill-fated Blythe Star.
The ship sinks off the remote coast of South-West Tasmania and he joins 13 men on a life raft. They paddle to land every day and get blown back toward Antarctica every night. The first mate keeps Michael alive as the captain proves himself to be selfish and incompetent and the men begin to fight between themselves.
When they do reach land they become trapped in some of the wildest, thickest bush in Australia. Sick and starving, Michael says goodbye to the first mate who dies staring out to sea. With a final push Michael hears the sound of a car and rescues the 9 ship mates that are still alive.
